Winedale Zoom Talk: “Brass Bands & Bullseyes: German-Texans and their Schuetzenverein Traditions”

Monday, March 17, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (CDT)

Description

Join Railey Tassin and Gavin Miculka from Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill State Historic Sites, on Thursday, April 17th at noon, as they share the history of German-Texan schützenvereine, or marksmanship clubs. Originating in the 12th century Germanic regions of Europe, the traditions of schützenvereine were imported to the United States and Texas in the mid-1800s. These clubs became community centers for German immigrants and their neighbors to compete in target shooting, celebrate holidays, dance to German music, and gather as a community. Railey and Gavin will highlight the history of the Bluff Schuetzenverein which once made its home on the grounds of present-day Monument Hill and inspired the sites’ annual Bluff SchuetzenFest in May.
